SAUGATUCK TWP. -- Saugatuck Township officials are giving money to the dogs. From Our Advertisers
The Township Board voted Wednesday to spend $10,000 to install a parking lot and fencing at a proposed park for dog owners and their canine companions.
The money for the dog park will come from $50,000 that Allegan County paid to Saugatuck Township for the placement of a 911 emergency communications tower on township-owned property.
A group of dog-loving residents of the Saugatuck-Douglas-Laketown area are opening the 5-acre Tails 'n Trails park. The residents have collected $5,000 in private donations to help with costs.
Laurie Collins, a member of the dog-park committee, said the group hopes that once the main area is open, dog lovers will visit the park and become excited about efforts to develop it.
The park will be located in Saugatuck Township, east of Int. 196 and south of Blue Star Highway. It will be dedicated to safe exercise and socialization for dogs and their owners, the organizers said.
The park will be completely fenced in, with more than two acres of wooded walking trails for pets and owners to explore.
A separate fenced-in area will be reserved for special canine event rentals, including birthday parties, training classes and, possibly, an agility course.
A doggie-bag station for waste pick-up also will be established.
Anyone wishing to make a donation can send checks to the Saugatuck Township Hall, with "Dog Park" in the memo line.
The group is looking for volunteers to help clear the land for trails and to do some light construction.
Call Saugatuck Township offices at (269) 857-7721.
