Muskegon's "dog beach" is always a hit! Especially on a Friday evening with a gorgeous sunset brewing. Juliette, Ella, and Josie enjoyed the brisk Lake Michigan water.

We are in the budget!

Looks like our city-sanctioned dog park is officially in the budget, according to The Grand Rapids Press article, "City cuts budget, still outspends revenue".

Click on the extended entry below to read the full article.

Congratulating themselves for cutting fat and not raising taxes, Grand Rapids city commissioners Tuesday adopted a belt-tightening budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

"I've been around here for 12 years and this is the tightest one we've seen," 1st Ward Commissioner Roy Schmidt said.

The $269 million plan calls for the city to spend nearly $6 million more than it takes in, leaving the city with a $6.1 million general fund balance at the end of the year.

The budget also eliminates or "de-funds" 86 jobs and contemplates a pay freeze that has yet to be negotiated with the unions representing most of the city's 1,881 employees.

Mayor John Logie described the budget as a "living document" and said the commission should be prepared to re-visit it.

During the past six weeks, City Manager Kurt Kimball backed down on several of his original budget-cutting proposals, including a plan to charge special events and parades for half of the city's labor costs and a plan to reduce the fire department's overtime bill by cutting the department's minimum daily staffing levels from 57 firefighters to 53.

Instead, Kimball found the money to fund special events by cutting subsidies to the cemetery fund and raising special events rates in the city's Parking Fund.

A proposal to spend $25,000 to create a new city dog park remained in the budget.

Hobbes is a friendly, crazy chocolate lab owned by Reji and Frank Gort. Just keep an eye out for those tennis balls he brings over for you to throw -- they're usually pretty gooey!

Freeway needs a home

freeway by couch.jpg

This little cutie, named Freeway, is looking for a new home. The details from the couple who found her:

"She was just spayed, had a heart worm test (currently on heart and flea pills), rabies and distemper shots. She's great with kids (loves them and wants to clean their faces), great with other dogs. She is crated at night. She weighs about 40 pounds.

"I have been training her various commands to do things like 'hurry up go' means to go potty, and 'it's time to go to bed' and she runs into her crate. She knows to sit by the door if she has to go potty, and when you get a treat out you don't have to tell her to sit, she will just sit there and wait for the treat. She is learning 'no,' shake,' and 'down.'

"I could go on and on, she's just a great dog and I want her to go to someone I can keep in contact with or someone I know who will be good 'parents' for her. She's had a rough life already. She was pushed out the door either after having puppies, or during having puppies and was skin and bones when we found her by the freeway.

"The Humane Society said we could either take her home or let her go because they couldn't 'come and get her right now.' So we have had her ever since and it has been wonderful. I will miss her terribly but I know in my heart I did the right thing by keeping her and finding a good home for her."
